Below about $800 you are buying unbranded cells, cable brakes, and no warranty support; above $3,000 you are paying for mid-drive motors and full suspension that only trail and cargo riders need. How far can an electric bike actually go on one charge?

Expect 25 to 45 miles of real-world range from a typical 500–700Wh battery, not the 60+ miles printed on the box. Manufacturer range claims are measured at the lowest pedal-assist level, on flat ground, with a light rider. Hills, throttle use, cold weather, and a heavier rider can cut real range roughly in half, so buy for the range you need on your worst day, not your best.

What is the difference between a Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bike?

Class 1 is pedal-assist only up to 20 mph. Class 2 adds a throttle, still capped at 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist up to 28 mph with no throttle assist above that speed. Class 1 and 2 are allowed on most bike paths; Class 3 is often restricted to roads and bike lanes, so check your local rules before buying the fastest option.

Are electric bike batteries safe?

A certified battery is. Look for UL 2849 certification on the complete bike and UL 2271 on the battery pack — the standard New York City and a growing list of municipalities now require for e-bikes sold in their jurisdictions. Nearly all reported e-bike fires trace back to uncertified, cheap third-party replacement packs, so always buy a replacement battery from the bike manufacturer, matched to its battery management system.

Hub motor or mid-drive — which should you buy?

Buy a hub motor unless you ride steep hills or heavy loads. Hub drives are cheaper, quieter, and virtually maintenance-free, which is why they power almost every e-bike under $2,000. Mid-drive motors push power through the chain and gears, so they climb far better and handle cargo weight — but they cost more and wear out chains and cassettes faster.

How much should you spend on an e-bike lock?

About 10 percent of the bike’s value, which for a $1,000 to $3,000 e-bike means a $100 to $200 lock. E-bikes are prime theft targets because they are expensive and easy to resell, and a $20 cable lock is cut in seconds with hand-held cutters.
